1. What are your nicknames?

Vora--from as long as I can remember to now, siblings have called me this.

La-La-La--no longer in use. The waiters at the Chinese restaurant, Tina's on 20th Street and Park Ave. South in NYC, that was my first long-term job (4 years--1988-1991) called me that.

Hippie--no longer in use. The waiters at the Ground Round that used to be on Northfield Road in Warrensville Heights, Ohio called me that in the mid-80's.

Matilda--no longer in  use. Classmates called me this in elementary school because my first name, like my mothers's, is "Mattie."

2. What do you do before bedtime?

Word-process. Read/write emails. Say "Good night" to my kids and chant "Nam-myoho-renge-kyo" with them 3 times.

3. What fandom(s) are you most into at the moment?

Okay, I had to look up the definition of "fandom" on the Internet. I am into none. I watch very little TV. I will not be buying that Big Brother compulsory gadget to allow the US government to peer into my private life and that of my fellow unwitting citizens.

Starting in 2009, our TV will be for video-use only officially, as it already unofficially is. I got this idea from a friend yesterday and, to me, it's brillant.

Don't know what I'll do once the old analogue TV dies. Maybe I better go buy one now before the only ones available are the ones with Big Brother pre-installed.

"Big Brother" by Stevie Wonder.
Click the video to listen now, please, for the full interactive experience and the woo-ooh-woo Twilight Zone creepy effect that our current times demand. In case you can't understand the actor's first line, he says, "Thought crime is death." Sound familiar? It should after what the Patriot Act has done to our civil liberties.

 4. your favorite scent?

Freshly cut watermelon. Freshly cut grass (which smells like watermelon). Dove soap, original. Chocolate.

5. What videogames are you playing at the moment?

None. Don't play them.

6. What is your theme song?

"Solsbury Hill" by Peter Gabriel. Please listen now to get the whole enchilada as in question #3 but without the 1984 Orwellian creepiness.

7. Do you trust easily?

Yes. And No. I trust easily but will lose it easily if I perceive there are signs that I should not trust. Want to become more trustworthy myself.

8. Do you generally think before you act, or act before you think?

I act first, typically. But am working on being more thoughtful. I'm getting better at it.

9. Is there anything that has made you unhappy these days?

Yes. Friends who caution me not to do the things they do routinely. I need to have a "thoughtful" conversation with them about this stuff. It pisses me off.

Deep breaths.

Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.

Also, I'm sure my kids will say: "But Mom, you do that to us all the time--preach what you don't practice." See? I'm already being thoughtful, mature, and self-reflective about this.

10. Do you have a good body-image?

Yes. Although my body is flabbier than it ever has been, I appreciate it more than ever. It helps me do stuff. What's not to like about that?

11. Is being tagged fun?
This is my first time being tagged. I am dodging the question as I type. Tagging back is allowing me to procrastinate when I should be revising a YA manuscript. But I am telling myself that I am not procrastinating. I am actually engaged in a creative writing exercise that is preparing me, mentally and physically, to actually tackle that manuscript.

12. What websites do you visit daily?
I've been going to PRLog.org to check to see how many visitors have been checking out my latest news release. I go to HuffingtonPost.com, but not daily. SgiBuddhism.org, but not daily. Yahoo News, usually each day I log on.

13. What have you been seriously addicted to lately?

Watermelon. But now that the weather is cooling down, the thrill is fading.

Cycling. Not at all looking forward to snow and the lack of bike-riding surfaces outside that it will mean.

14. What kind of person do you think the person who tagged you is?

She's so cool!

15. What’s the last song that got stuck in your head?

Now, "Big Brother" by Stevie Wonder. See #3 above.

16. What’s your favorite item of clothing?

My new Lee relaxed fit jeans. Whoever thunk up the concept of putting spandex in all kinds of fabric should win a Nobel Prize in something.

17. Do you think Rice Crispies are yummy?

Nope. It's been over 10 years since I ate them, I bet. I doubt that they've gotten any yummier since then.

18. What would you do if you see saw $100 lying on the ground?

If I thought I could possibly return it the owner, I'd try to do that. If there was no way I could find out who lost it, I'd keep it.

19. What items could you not go without during the day?

Toilet paper.

20. What should you be doing right now?

Revising my YA  manuscript.

I'm tagging: [info]illustrator222, [info]cindachima, and[info]meredith_wood

Can you say "Sexist"?????

Got this from a blog I found at JacketFlap.com...

"...Scholastic clearly wants me to start the week off angry. books in the Spring 09 catalog that split the genders in half: The Girls' Book of Glamour and The Boys' Book of Survival. Just in case you don't get the message they're selling here is what these "handy guides" will teach you to do:

Host a spa party, create your own style and look beautiful for free!

Exit a limo gracefully, make your own body glitter, and persuade your best friend to lend you her clothes!
Have the shiniest hair, put on a fashion show, and make your own jewelry box!"

Yuck!

Last Christmas, I bought the Dangerous Book for Boys and the Daring Book for Girls for my kids--both by Collins. (Not HarperCollins, just Collins--don't know if they're affiliated). I thought that was a cool way to go seeing as how "Dangerous" came first in the duo. But Scholastic's spin-off is so blecky...

Who thunk this one up? Read the rest of the original blog post here: http://www.chasingray.com/archives/2008/08/its_a_monday.html.

What's with the Rapid Eye Movement?

  • Aug. 23rd, 2008 at 12:28 AM
cover, book, taneesha, disparaging, never

Last week I shot a segment on a Cleveland TV show to publicize the upcoming Northern Ohio Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (N. OH. SCBWI) conference and read from my new book, Taneesha Never Disparaging. Do not ask me what the heck was going on with my eyes because I have no idea. It took me an hour to download this video clip so that I could finally watch it. I can't get the program on my home TV. I barely get any stations at all on it. We don't do TV much here. Anyway, I was batting and blinking and fluttering so much I'm surprised I was able to even see.

But I read live from page 1 of Taneesha Never Disparaging. That was cool. I enjoyed it. Host Leon Bibb helped a lot in that regard. He's so smooth. Plus my co-N. OH SCBWI partner, Jean Daigneau, carried herself like a pro which made the morning breezy. Maybe that's why I blinked so much--the breeze was in my eyes...

"I love Taneesha’s struggles. Her problems grow bigger and bigger until they’re ready to burst. The author does a great job of moving the story forward toward its inevitable ending. The characters interact well, and readers will feel Taneesha’s very real frustration when her parents won’t listen to what she’s trying to say or when her friend doesn’t seem to know what’s wrong... this is a book that will resonate with its target audience....The cover art, by honor winning Floyd Cooper, is worth mentioning, as the characters are ready to jump off the cover and tell their own stories."

- Julie M. Prince (LJ's own!), Reviewer for YABooksCentral.com.

Maybe I'll Start Writing Poetry Again...

Not sure if this is a trend but I wrote a poem last night, prompted by frustration over people who try to promote powerlessness. Anyway, you can check it out on my other blog, which is less writerly than this one. That blog is more political and more (sometimes) Buddhist, too. The Poem's titled "Guidance--It's and Optional Thing (This isn't Hypnosis)." Check it out here:

For you early Sunday risers in Northern Ohio...

On Sunday, August 24, I'll appear on the Kaleidoscope television program in Cleveland, Ohio (NewsNet 5, WEWS) with Jean Daigneau, Regional Advisor of the Northern Ohio Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (N. OH SCBWI). Tune in to channel 5 to learn about our annual conference. Details about the conference are at www.noh.scbwi.org

We taped this morning with host Leon Bibb who is smooth, smooth, smooth, I tell you. I read from page 1 of my new book, too--Taneesha Never Disparaging. I got copies in the mail this week. I LOVE how it turned out visually-wise. The front is the same as the advance reading copy I already had. But the back is all new with text I really like and in a cool shade of blue. And the page paper is recycled and just fab.... To read chapter 1, click here. If you've got a book you want to promote, or one coming out soon, sign up for my book promotion workshop at the conference.

Has anyone else read this book? I finished it today. It was a quick read. I couldn't help thinking that it was like witnessing the beginning of a sea change. Kind of like what the Blues, and later, Rock and Roll, and still later, Hip Hop, did to music. Created a genre that had never quite existed before--one that will now be with us forever.

For me, apparently unlike all the other readers on Amazon, Hugo Cabret wasn't an earth-moving read. But it did succeed in making me read and turn the page. I wanted to know where it was going. And, really, as an author, if your reader does more than that--for instance, if he or she is deeply moved as a result of your work--that's just so much frosting. Wonderfully delicious frosting, maybe. But frosting nonetheless.

I recommend this one. You'll be glad you read it. It's a feel good book. With hidden messages, intrigue, and detailed, artistic illustrations. If you don't know, it's also the first novel to win the Caldecott--An American Library Association (ALA) honor for illustrations. Caldecott's have, until now, been awarded only to picture books.

Finally went swimming with my 9 year-old. After a week with her in NYC. On a day that was sweltering hot. Perfect for an outside romp in the pool.

Back from New York City

Had a great time although there were a few weird blips. My youngest daughter spent a week in New York City, where I lived from 1985-1992. She was at a Suzuki violin workshop at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music Mon-Fri. What a great time she had. It really revved up her enthusiasm for violin.

I took  her stomping through parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn. We visited my old friends and hang out spots. The last day, we went to Coney Island, where I'd never been, unbelievably. At the end, she got to romp in the Atlantic for a while. At first, when we returned home last night, her brother and sister didn't believe it when she'd said she'd been in the ocean. But she had.

Great bonding with one kid. I don't always get to do that since I have three. Want to do it with the others, too.

One of the few low points for me was eating onion rings and, immediately afterwards, getting on a spinning ride. Without elaborating, let's just say that no matter how many times my daughter screamed, "Open your eyes, Mommy!" for the sake of everyone nearby and below, I didn't.

Where are the Worms?

  • Jul. 3rd, 2008 at 2:00 PM
cover, book, taneesha, disparaging, never

It rained today. A lot. So much and so fiercely that, to my daugther's deep sadness, they closed the pool for the swimming lesson she was going to have today due to the fear of lightning striking.

When I was a kid, if it rained like it did today worms would have been everywhere.

I haven't seen one.  Mud we've got plenty of but worms, no.

My mother's noticed the same thing. She likes to fish. She said she never used to have to "buy" bait. She could go out in our back yard and dig up all the worms she needed.

Not anymore.

My stepson and his wife live on the other side of town--in a suburb that's more countrified than where we live. According to my son, they've got plenty of worms. I have to take his word for it because I didn't witness this myself, but my son says his 3 year-old nephew was scooping up worms like crazy in his back yard last time we were there.

So, this de-worming thing seems to definitely be related to being in an urban environment. To pollution. That boiling frog that doesn't know it's boiling better wake up and smell the broth, I think.

What about you? Do you have worms or not? And if you have them are they as plentiful as ever?

Just curious.

Hi,

I'm M. LaVora Perry. Along with Dr. Linda Bradley of the Cleveland Clinic, I'm the coauthor of the 7-book series, TEEN SISTERS' HEALTH--A BODY, MIND, & SPIRIT WELLNESS GUIDE FOR GIRLS OF COLOR.

I'm inviting you to join the TeenSistersHealth LJ community located at  http://community.livejournal.com/teensisters. In this moderated, private community, girls, young women, parents, educators, and youth and healthcare professionals talk about what it means to be a young woman of color today. Our 7 TEEN SISTERS' HEALTH books are about the same thing.

We'll be posting questions and answers straight from the pages of TEEN SISTERS' HEALTH. So you'll get information you can use right now to strengthen your body, mind, and spirit. Ask us a question and we'll answer it and maybe even put it in one of the books when they're published--with your permission, of course.

The first two postings for our TeenSistersHealth LJ community group are live now:

You'll have to join the community to read the responses to those two posts. But you can read the profile and see what we're about here.

Feel free to email me if you have questions and visit TeenSistersHealth.com to learn more about the Teen Sisters' Health books.

Where I Live: East Cleveland, Ohio

  • Jul. 2nd, 2008 at 9:54 AM
cover, book, taneesha, disparaging, never

East Cleveland gets bad-talked a lot--even by people who live here. But I think a place is only as good as the people that inhabit it. And we've got some good people and people who do bad things here just like everywhere else.

I think my city's on a serious comeback (it better be. I live here!). I was raised on the east side of Cleveland (Mount Pleasant), lived in NYC for 7 years, and lived here in East Cleveland since 1992, when I married my guy.

East Cleveland is near Cleveland's cultural hub--the orchestra, universities, museums, etc. It's a great location for that reason and because of the park I love--Forest Hill--one of the largest urban ones. Below are some of its geographical and architectural treasures. It has others.

I'm spiking this entry with lines from my unpublished YA HIDDEN JEWEL. Okay, I'm totally biting off of Jeannine Garsee (onegrapeshy ) who posted lines from her book. Before, After, & Somebody in Between,  with Cleveland photos. Her new one, Say the Word is also Cleveland-based. Hope you consider this the higher form of flattery, Jeannine...
